R/V CMU TAGU Tour: Navigation Equipment

The R/V CMU TAGU is a donation by the German civil and hydraulic engineering company TAGU, a part of LUDWIG FREYTAG Group, donated to us in summer 2019. We sailed the CMU TAGU from Montego Bay to the jetty at the CMU main campus in September 2019.

The Research vessel (R/V) is equipped with all modern technical equipment necessary for safe operation on the high seas. As a special research vessel, the ship is equipped with modern appliances for hydrographic surveys.

Navigation Equipment

Trimble SPS 551 H GPS Add-on, GLONASS-Option
The Trimble SPS551 is a dual-frequency Location GPS receiver, which provides up to decimeter accuracy

Trimble SPS 751 DGPS receiver
The Trimble SPS751 is a dual-frequency GPS receiver with the ability to receive OmniSTAR corrections. The SPS751 is also an ideal mobile receiver for semi-permanent mounting on vehicles and marine vessels.

GSM Modem, MSK Beacon receiver
Trimble’s fully integrated DGNSS Beacon System contains all components necessary to operate for years in harsh environments

KONGSBERG Seatex MRU 5 Motion Sensor
The MRU 5 is the ideal sensor for motion compensation of swathe bathymetric echo sounders, DP systems, ROVs, helideck monitoring systems, high speed vessel motion damping systems and tow-fish systems.

VHF-Device ICOM M 401
The compact IC-M401 is a basic, easy to use marine VHF radio. The IC-M401 also has other essential facilities such as all channel access, dual and tri-watch and fast scanning. The radio comes with a standard waterproof remote function microphone which provides instant channel selection.

VHF DSC Sailor RT 5022
The SAILOR RT5022 is a serious and reliable choice for the professional seaman, fulfilling and even exceeding GMDSS requirements. As the first VHF ever, the SAILOR RT5022 can store and replay incoming calls. The bridge being a busy and sometimes noisy place, this facility increases the safety at sea as a missed message just can be heard again.

GPS – Navigator Furuno GP 170
The Furuno GP 170 (D)GPS navigator is an ideal position sensor for radar, AIS, ECDIS, autopilot, echo sounder and other navigation and communications equipment. It’s completely new designed GPS chip and antenna unit deliver enhanced stability and precision in position fixing.

Radar Furuno FR 8252
The radar features state of the art signal processing, which makes it easier to identify targets in heavy rain and poor visibility. The radar can discern between rain and surface reflections, providing the ability to find and track the movement of rain clouds as well as removing unnecessary echoes.

NAVTEX Receiver Furuno NX-70
FURUNO NX-700 is a dual-channel NAVTEX receiver for SOLAS ships The NX-700 can receives two channels simultaneously. These messages include a variety of safety information such as Navigational Warnings, Meteorological Warnings, Search and Rescue (SAR) information and other information for ships sailing within the reach of each service station’s coverage.

AIS- Furuno FA-150
The FA-150 is designed to improve navigation safety by observing other AIS equipped ships. The FA-150 offers real-time information exchange of your own ships data and other AIS-equipped ships or coastal stations within VHF coverage. Information that is exchanged includes static, dynamic, voyage related data, as well as short safety-related messages.

Echo sounder Furuno FE 700
The purpose of the echo sounder is to provide safe navigation by detecting the clearance below the ship (particularly in shallow waters) as required on the SOLAS Convention ships by the IMO standards.

Autopilot AP 35
The Autopilot is developed with the particular needs of the professional mariner in mind. Small crew fishing vessels and work boats will find a perfect partner in the AP35. Simple Operation An autopilot must be simple to operate whether the boat is in transit or at work. The AP35 is equipped with dedicated push buttons for all major functions. For automatic steering when in transit the AUTO mode is the natural choice.
