Exxon says climate lawsuits violate its right to free speech

How money and politics in the US beat science to create climate change denial

In the history how money and politics in the US intimidate science into denying climate change, Exxon has now discovered a new variant. The company is arguing in the court of the violation of its fundamental right of freedom of expression. They want to be able to say what they want, even knowingly not the truth.

A podcast on the Internet platform Drilled shows how money and politics in the USA are harassing science to achieve denial of climate change.

There have been and still, are many complaints against Exxon not telling the truth about the negative impact of corporate policy on climate change. Recently, there have even been lawsuits in court, for example from the cities of San Francisco and Oakland.

The right of freedom of expression?

Exxon, for its part, filed a petition before the Texas 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals claiming that these lawsuits were part of a conspiracy to weaken the company’s right to freedom of expression and force it to change its position on climate change.

Exxon argued that the cities were trying to get the company to agree to some truths about climate change.

In so doing, the company argued, the plaintiffs were violating the First Amendment’s right to say whatever it wants about climate change, even if it is not true.

Can you believe that?
